Heights of formation of Fe I photospheric lines

چکیده
The determination of the location of spectral lineforming layers by means of line-depression contribution functions is checked by observational tests. The method is based on the assumption that the Doppler velocities derived from line bisectors at a given position in the profile of a spectral line are related to the actual bulk velocity at a particular height in the atmosphere. For a set of six magnetically sensitive and nonsensitive Fe I lines (543.45, 557.61, 630.15, 630.25, 649.50, 649.45 nm) the fluctuations of Doppler velocities along the slit of the spectrograph were determined at various ∆λ from the line centers i.e. at various heights in the photosphere. Correlations of fluctuations allow us to find those parts in line profiles which are formed at identical heights in the photosphere. These experimental results are compared with theoretical estimates based on line depression contribution functions. The agreement is good and best results are found for nonmagnetic strong, but still unsaturated lines. The results support the hypothesis that it is possible to ascribe a single height point in the solar atmosphere to a given position in a spectral line profile.

The solar abundance of iron and the photospheric model
Numerous papers on the solar photospheric abundance of iron have recently been published leading to a longstanding debate concerning rather different results obtained from the analyses of Fe i lines and, to a lesser extent, of Fe ii lines. Based on a set of 65 solar Fe i lines, with accurate transition probabilities as well as new accurate damping constants, we construct a new empirical photosp...
متن کاملLine formation in convective stellar atmospheres I.Granulation corrections for solar photospheric abundances
In an effort to estimate the largely unknown effects of photospheric temperature fluctuations on spectroscopic abundance determinations, we have studied the problem of LTE line formation in the inhomogeneous solar photosphere based on detailed 2-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics simulations of the convective surface layers of the Sun. By means of a strictly differential 1D/2D comparison of th...
متن کاملExplanation of the activity sensitivity of Mn I 5394 . 7 Å
Context. There is a long-standing controversy concerning the reason why the Mn i 5394.7 Å line in the solar irradiance spectrum brightens more at larger activity than most other photospheric lines. The claim that this activity sensitivity is caused by spectral interlocking to chromospheric emission in Mg ii h & k is disputed. Aims. To settle and close this debate. Methods. Classical one-dimensi...
متن کاملX-ray Fluorescent Fe Kα Lines from Stellar Photospheres
X-ray spectra from stellar coronae are reprocessed by the underlying photosphere through scattering and photoionization events. While reprocessed X-ray spectra reaching a distant observer are at a flux level of only a few percent of that of the corona itself, characteristic lines formed by inner shell photoionization of some abundant elements can be significantly stronger. The emergent photosph...
متن کاملVan Hoof effect between metallic lines in RR Lyrae II. Comparison with purely radiative models
The differential motion between the photospheric layers of RR Lyrae, where the metallic absorption lines are formed, is calculated with nonlinear nonadiabatic pulsating models recently published by Fokin & Gillet (1997). These atmospheric models are purely radiative and are generated with a Lagrangean code. A comparison between theoretical velocities of two Fe I and Fe II unblended lines shows ...
